What's better than playing with a new toy? Playing with one that you have made your self!
We have provided Toy Making Experiences to schools in England for years, giving children both the opportunity to learn skills in design and technology, and enhancing their sense of self esteem by going through a set of process to end with a toy that they have made and can play with.
Now this opportunity is open to everyone with our new Traditional Toy Mini Kits!
Cup and ball toys made their introduction to the world of play in the 14th century, and reached their peak of popularity in the 16th - 18th centuries.
Native American peoples, including the Inuit, played with a catch toy that involved catching/skewering hollowed out bone rings and leather fish onto a bone needle. A game of such popularity that adults might even gamble on the results.
Catch toys have evolved much since their begining with a variety of types now available throughout the world.
There are four steps to building your toy:
- Sand/smooth your components
- Draw your design
- Colour in
- Assemble
Included in your Traditional Toy Mini Kit:
- 1x wooden toy
- Approx. 50cm string
Other tools you might need:
- Sandpaper (between 120 and 180 grit)
- Pencil and colouring pencils (crayons are fine but do not use felt tips as the ink "bleeds" through the wood)
- PVA wood glue (fast drying)
