Britain at War
Join William and Alice as you journey back to wartime Britain, where the island fortress is standing against Germany in a truly global conflict.
Like many patriotic enthusiasts of the time, William is eager to do his bit for the war effort. He devours the latest news — not only of battles overseas, but also of intelligence work and secret codes. Inspired, he even attempts to create his own cryptographic puzzles!
Meanwhile, Alice finds William’s obsessions more bothersome than brilliant. Still, she’s glad to have him out from under her feet, as her days are filled with the challenges of rationing and making do. Meals can be monotonous, so she delights in swapping tips and recipes with other resourceful housewives determined to keep spirits high on the Home Front.

The Shows
As well as visitor engagement and games, as part of our Britain at War Event Days we provide several 30 minute shows throughout each day. Each show covers something different about social history, technology and innovation in the time of the Second World War, and is designed to get the audience involved and feel like they are part of the story.
Some of the shows might include:

Intelligence is the backbone of military success. Knowing the enemy’s next move — while keeping your own a secret — can be the difference between victory and defeat. Discover how codes and ciphers have been used for thousands of years, from light and sound to secret writing and visual tricks. Cryptography leapt forward in the lead-up to the Second World War, and its role in the conflict cannot be overstated. Can you break the code?

Behind enemy lines, the best option is not to get caught — but that’s easier said than done. Stranded in hostile territory, what training, or kit would keep you alive and give you the best chance of getting home? And if you are captured, is that the end? For some, duty, boredom, or desperation drove them to attempt daring escapes. Being a prisoner of war didn’t always mean total isolation — sometimes secret supplies arrived hidden in letters from home. Could you survive, escape and evade?

“They say an army marches on its stomach” — but in wartime, food was scarce for everyone. With U-boats trying to cut Britain’s supply lines, the country had to dig for victory. From the Land Army to allotments, every citizen was called upon to help. Nothing could be wasted, and rationing became part of daily life. It wasn’t only food — clothes, fuel, and everyday goods were rationed too. Some items required coupons, others points, and rules changed week by week. Could you survive on rations?

The Games
For many visitors it is the games that we provide that are the highlight. Our games are all games from the 1940's that transport players back in time. We fill our Games Arena with many different games, that are relevant to the period, that visitors can play at their leisure and return as much as they want.
Our Games Arena gives visitors something to enjoy from the moment the gates open to the end of the event. Some games are simple, others have more intricate rules, and this spread means that there is something for all.
