The Home Front
Join William and Alice as they prepare you for everyday life in Britain during the Second World War.
William is eager to “do his bit.” The moment Anthony Eden called for volunteers, he marched down to the police station to sign up for the Home Guard. Passionate about his role, he’s always ready to share his knowledge — and if you’re not careful, he might rope you in too!
Alice, meanwhile, is focused on the pressing challenges of daily survival. With rationing to contend with, she works tirelessly to keep the family fed and wishes William were around more to help at home.
Yet, even in wartime, there’s still room for joy. Both William and Alice love nothing more than forgetting the worries of war at a lively social dance — meeting friends, sharing laughter, and learning the latest steps.

The Shows
As well as visitor engagement and games, as part of our The Home Front event days we provide several 30 minute shows throughout each day. Each show covers something different about social history, technology and innovation in the time of the Second World War, and is designed to get the audience involved and feel like they are part of the story.
Some of the shows might include:

Not everyone could go to the front — but everyone could do their bit. For those too young, too old, or needed at home, there was the Home Guard. Volunteers trained to fight, defend, and protect the country in case of a German invasion. Step into their shoes, pick up your (mock) rifle, and learn how Britain’s “Dad’s Army” prepared to face invasion. Your country needs you — join the Home Guard today!

Wartime life wasn’t all duty and danger — people still needed fun, laughter, and release. Dancing was one of the most popular ways to escape the stresses of war. Learn authentic dances from the 1940s — lively, social, and suitable for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or have two left feet, you’ll leave smiling. Step onto the floor, swing into the rhythm, and dance the night away — 1940s style!

The Blitz brought terror, rubble, and fire to cities across Britain. Hitler hoped to break morale through relentless bombing, but the British spirit endured. From wardens and fire crews to messengers and child evacuees, everyone played a role. Blackouts, shelters, evacuations, and rebuilding became part of everyday life. Join the Civil Defence and experience what it was like to face the Blitz — with courage, resilience, and community spirit.

The Games
For many visitors it is the games that we provide that are the highlight. Our games are all games from the 1940's that transport players back in time. We fill our Games Arena with many different games, that are relevant to the period, that visitors can play at their leisure and return as much as they want.
Our Games Arena gives visitors something to enjoy from the moment the gates open to the end of the event. Some games are simple, others have more intricate rules, and this spread means that there is something for all.
