Medieval Life
Meet Nichodemus and Ursula as you step into the everyday world of medieval England.
Nichodemus is a physician, and it is to him that people turn when they are sick. Unlike many other practitioners of medieval medicine, physicians were expected to study, and it is this learning that has taken Nichodemus far and wide in search of knowledge.
The medieval world is often misunderstood. Far from being an age of ignorance, it was a time when people grappled with questions that still affect our lives today. How should money be managed? How can time be measured? How should illness be cured? The answers they found were sometimes ingenious, sometimes surprising and occasionally downright bizarre.
Whilst Nichodemus spends his days studying books and treating patients, Ursula keeps him grounded in the realities of everyday life. Together they offer a glimpse into a world that is at once familiar and strange; a world where science, medicine, religion and superstition all exist side by side.
Join them as they take you on a journey into medieval life. Discover some of the ideas, systems and beliefs that shaped the daily lives of ordinary people, and uncover the remarkable stories behind things that many of us take for granted today.
From clever inventions and curious customs to strange remedies and unexpected discoveries, medieval life was far more fascinating than many people imagine.

The Shows
As well as visitor engagement and games, as part of our Medieval Life event days we provide several 30 minute shows throughout each day. Each show covers something different about social history, technology and innovation in the Middle-Ages and is designed to get the audience involved and feel like they are part of the story.
Some of the shows might include:

Just who, and what, is a sheriff? We've heard of them in medieval legends such as Robin Hood, but what did they actually do, and why were sticks so vital to the medieval economy? Discover the surprisingly intricate world of medieval money and find out how the King made sure he always got his share.

When does a day begin? How long is an hour? What even is a clock? Through demonstrations, audience participation and working models, discover how medieval thinkers inherited ancient knowledge and helped shape the modern understanding of time that still governs our lives today.

If you were sick, would you really want to see a doctor? Who else could you turn to: a wise woman, the Church, or perhaps even a witch? If you did receive treatment, would it work… and would it hurt? In a world controlled by God and magic, discover the weird, wonderful and sometimes alarming ways our ancestors tried to cure their ills.

The Games
For many visitors it is the games that we provide that are the highlight. Our games are all Medieval games that transport players back in time. We fill our Games Arena with many different games, that are relevant to the period, that visitors can play at their leisure and return as much as they want.
Our Games Arena gives visitors something to enjoy from the moment the gates open to the end of the day. Some games are simple, others have more intricate rules, and this spread means that there is something for all.
