The Scriptorium
Where words become works of art!
Long before the printing press, books were painstakingly written and decorated by hand. Within the quiet walls of a medieval monastery, scribes worked to preserve knowledge, copy important texts and create beautiful manuscripts.
Join Nicodemus and Ursula as they welcome you into the monastery’s scriptorium. Discover how medieval manuscripts were produced, why writing was such a skilled art, and how scribes transformed ordinary words into something extraordinary.
Then try your hand at medieval calligraphy! Practise the art of shaping letters, explore the elegant style of medieval writing, and create your own scroll using traditional-inspired techniques.
Once your work is complete and the ink has dried, take your scroll home as a little piece of the medieval world.
Take up the scribe’s pen and discover the art of writing as it was practised centuries ago!
