Historical Displays and Performances
Bring history closer to your visitors
History can be discovered through the objects people used, the skills they developed and the things they made.
Our Historical Displays & Demonstrations bring these aspects of the past into your event through historical objects, engaging interpretation and demonstrations of traditional skills. They give visitors the opportunity to look more closely, ask questions and discover details of everyday life and craftsmanship that might otherwise be overlooked.
These experiences can add another dimension to a heritage event, museum programme, festival or family day. They can also complement a larger historical attraction, providing visitors with additional subjects to explore as they move around your event.

Objects, stories and traditional skills
Our displays and demonstrations can be developed around a range of historical themes and interests. Depending on the experience, visitors may be able to explore historical objects, discover how particular items were used, learn about traditional materials or watch a skill being demonstrated.
Examples of the types of experience we can offer include:
The Roman Abacus
Roman numerals often get a bad reputation when it comes to counting and calculation. Yet Roman engineers, architects and administrators managed feats that would have been impossible without effective ways of working with numbers.
Discover how the Romans approached calculation, see what an actual Roman abacus looked like and find out how it worked. Explore the practical mathematics behind Roman life and the remarkable engineering achievements of the ancient world.

Spinning and Weaving
In the ancient world, making cloth was a lengthy, skilled process, with every stage carried out by hand. From preparing sheep’s fleece to spinning thread and weaving fabric, producing clothing required considerable time and effort. Fine textiles could therefore be valuable possessions and signs of status.
Discover the processes involved in traditional textile production, including carding, spinning and weaving, and explore the importance of these skills in everyday life, folklore and mythology.

Meet the Toy Maker
As the Victorian era progressed, growing prosperity created a market for an expanding range of toys and playthings. Behind these much-loved objects were skilled makers producing goods for children and families.
Meet the toymaker at work as he prepares new stock, and discover some of the toys that captured the imaginations of children — and adults — in the nineteenth century.

Historical Object Displays
Have a particular historical subject or collection in mind?
We can discuss displays built around objects, tools and equipment from a chosen period, helping visitors discover how they were used and what they reveal about life in the past.

Traditional Crafts & Skills
From the materials people worked with to the things they made, traditional crafts offer a fascinating insight into historical life.
We can discuss craft-based displays and demonstrations suited to your event, depending on the subject, facilities and practical requirements.

Have something else in mind?
These are examples of the displays and demonstrations we can offer, rather than a complete list. If you have a particular historical object, craft, skill or theme in mind, get in touch and we can explore what might be possible for your event.

Flexible experiences for different venues
Displays and demonstrations can be useful where you want to add historical interest without commissioning a full-scale attraction. Depending on the subject, they may suit a museum room, a sheltered indoor area, a marquee or a space within a larger event.
The setup, visitor interaction and practical requirements will vary. Some displays are primarily for observation and discussion; others may include opportunities for visitors to handle selected objects or try a simple activity. Demonstrations involving specialist equipment or materials may require particular facilities and safety arrangements.
We will discuss these requirements with you before confirming an activity, so that the proposed experience is appropriate for your venue and event.
Combine displays with other experiences
A display or demonstration can stand alone or form part of a broader programme. It can complement a Signature Experience, add depth to a themed event or provide a quieter opportunity for visitors to explore a particular aspect of history.
If you have a historical subject, craft or skill in mind, we would be happy to discuss whether we can develop a suitable experience for your event.
Discuss your requirements
Tell us about your venue, your event and the subject you would like to explore. We can then discuss the available options, space requirements and suitability for your audience.
